Title:
The word 主 "master" might instead be translated as "chief priest." Hōrin'an,
which appears to be the name of a temple, cannot be positively identified.
Although there are no surviving temples with the name Hōrin'an, there is
a Rinzai temple known as Hōrinji 宝林寺 located in Kameoka to the west of Kyoto,
where conceivably the poet could have spent some time. It is also possible
that in haste Myōdō wrote 寶（宝）林庵 when he meant to write 玉林庵 (Gyokurin'an),
which might be a reference to Gyokurin'in 玉林院, a temple within the Daitokuji
complex, where Myōdō resided for many years. The sense of the sixth character
in the title, which appears to be 隹 (Jp. tori, fufudori, etc.), cannot be
determined; thus, the word has been omitted from the translation. There is a one-word lacuna
after the first character in the title, a sign of the poet's respect for the individual
designated in the four-character phrase which follows.
