Yellow, red, purple, white -- all arranged in rows.
Spring and summer, watered and banked, then protected from the cold.
A graceful, understated beauty, fragrance everywhere.
They've been moved here into the hall; I study them carefully.
Prologue:
The phrase 有國咏 might alternatively be read "Arikuni [uta o] eijite," with
有國 being the host's given name. The suggestion that 國咏 should perhaps be
taken to mean "native verse" here was made by colleagues in the
Heian
jinbutsushi
group, but other similar usages have not been found. Shōran means "orchid connoisseur."
